Fred Bentley, the dean of agriculture at the University of Alberta, proposed the name "Malmo" for the neighbourhood, derived from the type of soil prevalent in the area—a loamy variety known as malmo. This unique naming connection to the soil underscores the neighbourhood's ties to its agricultural past.
